Had a great day climbing with Matt at Sennen. He took time to determine what we wanted from the day, started easy and built up – guiding and instructing as we progressed. We felt in good hands through the day and would thoroughly recommend him.

Amazing climbing experience with Tom. He provided challenge and was great company and the session was extremely safe and well run. We had mostly climbed indoors so great to have an outdoors climb in a beautiful scenic spot with loads of routes.

Lead climbing involves climbing a route while placing your own protection as you go, rather than having a fixed rope for safety. It’s different from top-rope climbing, where the rope is already anchored at the top. Lead climbing requires more advanced skills, including gear placement, not to mention learning to keep a cool head whilst climbing above your last piece of gear!

While experienced climbers can tackle multi-pitch climbing independently, it’s recommended to hire a qualified climbing instructor if you’re unfamiliar with the routes or specific techniques. Guides provide invaluable local knowledge, help with safety, and ensure you make the most of your climbing experience, especially on Cornish sea cliffs, where conditions can be challenging.

At the lower grades, Land’s End Long Climb and Commando Ridge at Bosigran are fantastic options. For climbers tackling middle grades, Bosigran and Chair Ladder offer a huge number of classics, ranging from Hard Severe to lower E-grades. For those looking for more technical challenges, crags like The Great Zawn, Carn Gowla, and Pentire Head provide adventurous trad climbing with stunning coastal views.

The best time for sea cliff climbing in Cornwall is typically from spring to early autumn (April to September). During these months, the weather is milder, and the sea conditions are generally more predictable, making it safer and more enjoyable. However, always check the weather, swell and tide forecast, as coastal conditions can change rapidly.

Commando Ridge at Bosigran and Land’s End Long Climb are excellent beginner-friendly multi-pitch climbs in Cornwall, as well as being classic of their grade. These routes offer a manageable challenge for those who are ready to step up from single-pitch climbs.

For multi-pitch climbing in Cornwall, essential equipment includes a harness, helmet, ropes, belay devices, and a range of protection gear (nuts, cams, and slings). It’s also vital to have a good understanding of anchor systems and rope management to ensure your safety over multiple pitches.
